Imagine a customer arriving at a point of sale, at a specialist retailer. They discover your product there, but they do not know your brand. On the web, this person would tend to look for more information: company website, reviews from other customers, Facebook page…
At the point of sale, you can always try putting a label indicating the web address of your product page. This solution is far too impractical for the hurried consumer, who may then turn to the product of a better-known brand.
A simple method accessible to everyone
The QR Code is a simple and effective way to allow smartphone owners (who will be the majority within a few years) to quickly obtain additional information about your products or your brand. It is a two-dimensional barcode (see the image at the top right of this article). By scanning the code in front of the smartphone camera lens, visitors access a web page or a text of your choice.
You can generate the code yourself using the free tools available on the web. Thus, with a simple gesture, you will create the link between your points of sale and your online presence.
Importance of the destination content
When the QR Code points to a web page, it is preferable to invest a little time and/or money in the landing page. Indeed, if your visitors are directed to your website and the latter is not optimized for mobile display (which is the case for the majority of sites), the effect can prove disastrous for your image, and therefore for your sales.
Among the possible solutions:
1. Develop a mobile version of the website. Ideal but expensive: this involves creating a special CSS, and creating content whose display is suited to small screens.
2. Use the company’s Facebook Fan Page: the social networking site is fairly well suited to mobile devices, and it is possible to add static pages to it (for example product pages). The advantage of this method is that it also allows you to at the same time attract new fans to your Facebook page.
This is of course only one of the applications of the QR code. Give it a try, it’s magic!
