Two-Factor authentication becomes mandatory to access Webmecanik

In an era where cybersecurity threats are continuously evolving, securing company data, customer information, and access points has become crucial for companies of all sizes. For this reason, Webmecanik is implementing an important update to its security protocols: starting March 31, 2024, two-factor authentication (2FA or MFA) will be required for all users wishing to access its software.

Why is this update necessary?

The implementation of two-factor authentication introduces an additional layer of security, requiring users to provide two forms of identification before accessing their account. This method, which combines the usual username and password, with a code generated by apps like Google Authenticator or FreeOTP, significantly increases access security. It’s particularly effective at mitigating the risks associated with identity theft, phishing, credential theft, and data breaches to prevent unauthorized access.

Access risks without two-factor authentication

Cyberattacks aren’t just technical problems; they can result from intentional or accidental information leaks, including malicious behavior or errors that companies may not anticipate. Specifically, a hacker gaining access to a username and password can have severe repercussions for a business.

The use of two-factor authentication (MFA) drastically reduces the risk of cyberattacks, particularly phishing, by blocking over 99.9% of attack attempts through an additional verification step beyond mere credentials. According to Verizon’s 2023 report, 83% of data breaches are caused by external actors, often through compromised credentials, which account for 61% of breaches. However, only 62% of businesses implement MFA, leaving many vulnerable. Implementing MFA is essential to strengthen security and protect sensitive data from unauthorized access.

Without this measure, companies face the following risks:

  • Personal data leaks: data breaches can put a company in jeopardy, requiring legal action to protect compromised information and meet regulatory obligations.
  • Disclosure of information: revealing secret or crucial information can damage a company’s reputation and result in significant financial losses.
  • Online reputation impact: indiscriminate mass email campaigns or other activities conducted through marketing automation software can lead to a company being blacklisted, affecting its domain name and internet infrastructure.

Activating and Setting Up 2FA

Activation of this feature begins on the my.webmecanik.com portal. Only administrators can initiate this process through the company settings under the Users tab, ensuring a consistent and secure application of 2FA for all.

Key steps for users:

  • Activation by administrators: in the company settings on my.webmecanik.com, activate 2FA to implement this security measure across your organization.
  • Configuration by users: following activation by an administrator, users will be guided to configure their 2FA upon their next login. This includes scanning a QR code and entering a unique code provided by the selected authentication app.

Key action for enhanced protection

Implementing two-factor authentication offers many benefits, including a reduction in phishing attacks, as mere credential theft becomes insufficient for hackers. It helps bolster security against unauthorized access, promotes a culture of security within the organization, and maintains the trust of your clients and partners.
