Manage your cookies for your GDPR compliance

What the GDPR law says

As part of the GDPR, it is required to obtain the explicit consent of your visitors on your site in order to use cookies. Why? Quite simply because cookie technology makes it possible to collect personal information about visitors’ behavior and profile while identifying them without their knowledge. Hence the need to obtain explicit consent from the visitor, as you must do when you collect an email address if you intend to send them marketing messages.

Article 30 of the GDPR specifies:

« Natural persons may be associated with […] online identifiers such as IP addresses and connection markers (“cookies”) or other identifiers […]. These identifiers may leave traces which, in particular when they are combined with unique identifiers and other information received by the servers, may be used to create profiles of natural persons and identify those persons. »

This information reinforces Article 26, which indicates that any information that can be used to identify an individual directly or indirectly is considered personal data.

In this context, the CNIL is proactive and supportive. As early as last year, it published an article explaining the subject and offering a free, open-source tool to set up this consent collection system for the use of cookies. Read “Centralized cookie consent collection solutions: tag managers“.
The CNIL itself has also been using this software to manage the use of cookies on its site for more than a year.

Tarteaucitron.js is a free and Open Source (JavaScript) script that can be installed on your website. After a simple configuration, you can set up this consent collection system.
