plone versus drupal, worpress and joomla

The 2010 version of the Idealware report has just been released. This document compares the 4 CMSs most used in the NGO world: Plone, Drupal, WordPress and Joomla.

The summary of the comparison is as follows:

Comparatif-plone-joomla-wordpress-drupal
Summary of the Idealware comparison between Plone, Drupal, WordPress and Joomla

Plone ranks among the best in essential aspects for users, in particular:

  • Intuitive content editing, encouraging regular site updates and the addition of new content
  • Flexibility in terms of graphics and design
  • Built-in search engine optimization
  • Excellent management of user permissions and workflows
  • Numerous possibilities for extension and integration with other systems

Finally, let us remember that Plone has been a benchmark in terms of security since its creation, which the report once again confirms.

Plone’s weaknesses mainly concern the hosting and installation of the system, which require specialist know-how and a slightly more robust server configuration than for CMSs written in PHP. For organizations that entrust the creation of their site to a service provider (which is the case in the majority of projects), this point is not a problem.

Let us also remember that with the arrival of Plone 4, speed has become a major advantage of this CMS (see for example here)
