Creating a segment

In Webmecanik Automation, there are two types of segments, and it is essential to understand the difference. Static segments, which are updated only through a deliberate action, and dynamic segments, which are updated automatically.

Static segments

Let’s start with static segments.

These segments are not based on the profile or behavior of contacts, but only on deliberate updates linked to an action. There are 6 actions to place a contact in a static segment:

  • The campaign action “modify the contact’s segments”
  • The form action “modify the contact’s segments”
  • The point trigger “modify the contact’s segments”
  • Importing a CSV file into a segment
  • Manually adding a contact to a segment via the contact profile
  • For developers, via the API

To create a static segment, go to the left-hand side menu and click segment > new > give your segment a name and optionally a description, and do not add a filter.

Dynamic segments

You can also create dynamic segments. These segments are essential for targeted and automated nurturing.

To create a dynamic segment, go to the left-hand side menu and click segment > new > give your segment a name and optionally a description, then go to the filter tab.

Here, you can choose from many filters how to define your segment. All contacts that meet the criteria you select will be automatically added to the dynamic segment. Whether today, tomorrow, or in 6 months if your segment is still active.

In the filters, you will find all the standard and custom fields for your contacts, such as the city or the job title of contacts. You will also find the standard and custom fields for companies if you segment your companies by industry, for example.
Finally, you will find a range of behavioral filters such as visiting a URL, opening an email, submitting a form, downloading a resource, or being a member of another segment.

You can combine several filters with AND and OR conditions. You can mix filter types without limit.

Exceptions

Keep in mind that there are a few exceptions to dynamic segments. A contact added to these segments through campaign, form, etc. actions used in static segments will be forcibly added to the dynamic segment, even if they do not meet the criteria.
They will only be able to leave it through another action of this type.

Using segments

Now that you know how to create your segments, all you have to do is use them as a campaign source. To do this, go to the left-hand side menu > Campaigns > New > Launch the builder > Select the segment or segments as the source of the campaign.

Viewing contacts in a segment

Once your segments are updated automatically, you can consult the contacts they contain at any time. To do this, go to the left sidebar > Segments. Here, you have visibility over all your segments.
In the last column of the table, you have the number of contacts present in the segment. Be careful, this number is the total number of contacts, whether identified or anonymous. If you click on this small label, the list of contacts will be displayed.

Exporting a segment

From the segment contact view, you can export the contacts. To do this, click at the top right > then the “Export” button. The download of a CSV file containing all contacts will start.
