The alternative provided by Webmecanik on the new rules on cookie management

As explained on our blog, the new rules on cookie management will soon be here (Chrome 80 is scheduled for February 2020). These new rules will now block by default (Standard mode) third-party cookies.
In addition and as promised, while Webmecanik is directly affected by these new guidelines, we have been working hard over the past few months to develop a solution that will allow you to continue to benefit from the features of your favorite marketing automation software, Webmecanik Automation.

Turn third-party cookies into first-party cookies

That’s the whole point. As said before, only third party cookies are impacted. We therefore had to implement the tools and interfaces necessary to allow you to transform our third-party cookies into your first-party cookies. And this so that the web browsers of your visitors let them run.

Our technical solution

We find this new rule rather useful when it comes to protecting your private data, which is why, as always, we are trying to be transparent and simply explain to you what we are going to put in place.

The technique consists in setting up a sub-domain on your main domain name, which you are going to “lend” to us. We will configure this sub-domain on your Automation instance in order to have a software in your name, such as automation.mydomain.com.

This allows the browser to understand that when your website mydomain.com is displayed and the tracking script of your Webmecanik Automation instance loads, that you should not block this content because it belongs to you.

Actions to be implemented by our users

Our solution is still in beta and the interface is not yet available to you, but it won’t be long now.
However, you can note that very soon, as soon as you open your next marketing automation account at Webmecanik, you will have the possibility to configure a personalized instance domain name. This 100% automated action on our side, but will still require some action on your part.

You will need to create a CNAME in the DNS zone of the domain name of your site (the one on which you will install the tracking script and forms) and point it to our servers. The precise address will be available in the interface of your myWebmecanik account, in the configuration tab of your Webmecanik Automation account.

Then you will need to restart your tracking scripts and form manager, landing page and pop-in scripts. All this is of course explained in the tutorial article of our FAQ.

The solution will be available to our customers just before the launch of the new version of Google Chrome impacting more than 70% of your website visitors. You are not a Webmecanik user? Find out quickly from your marketing automation editor to see if steps have already been taken, or join us!
