The Mautic community, at the heart of Webmecanik
When David Hurley first developed Mautic in 2015, he wanted to build a community that gives everyone the power to understand, manage, and grow their business or organization. This belief has been at the core of Webmecanik ever since we decided to help companies set up marketing campaigns that are truly useful to their growth.
Second-largest contributor worldwide to the open-source Mautic solution
From 2015, we chose to take part in the development of the open-source Mautic solution—we are now the second-largest contributor in the world—and we believe that open source is the best way to spread best practices in marketing automation. The 350 companies that use our services made this choice for short-term reasons such as an ROI four times higher than proprietary solutions, the ease of having qualified resources anywhere in the world at an affordable price without going through a private vendor, and ultimately the DNA of an open-source solution—that is, the openness of the code that makes it easy to adapt the solution to one’s needs and software environment.

But there are also even more important long-term reasons if you think you are making a structural choice for your company. Having an open roadmap allows you to make priority choices that may not yet be the majority’s. For example, Mautic was available in 22 languages from its first year—something a brand-new proprietary vendor could never have done. Next, you’re sure that all the building blocks remain open-source—like Symfony and PHP—guaranteeing independence and long-term viability. Finally, compatibility with software solutions you haven’t chosen yet within your organization is more easily ensured. A bonus for the future!
Of course, there may be very practical reasons not to choose an open-source email automation solution. You might be blocked by your CRM or ERP vendor, which forces you to stay with in-house products, since the API doesn’t allow integration with external solutions, or because the system then works much less well. You might also have reasons related to internal policy within your organization and managing your personal risk by choosing a well-known brand as the most popular. In that case, Hubspot or Adobe Marketo is a must. Also, for 24/7 support requirements or guarantee amounts in the event of a dispute, only billion-dollar multinational companies will be able to reassure your IT leadership and your legal department.
There are many other questions I’ve been asked to address as part of a keynote on choosing an open-source marketing automation solution (in English).
But don’t forget that in the end, the right choice is the one that meets your company’s needs and its customer-relationship business goals.
